THE ICE HOUSE
Located in the Historic District of Keystone, South Dakota, The Ice House is only 3 miles away from Mount Rushmore and is a short walk from Keystone's main street. Many other Black Hills attractions and historic sites are located nearby, starting with the Keystone Historical Museum.
The Ice House was built in 1935 as part of the first official Forest Service Ranger Station in the Black Hills, located on Box Elder Creek near Nemo, SD. The Ice House was moved in 2004 to this site which was previously occupied by the Sullivan Drug Store. Next door is Halley's Store, the oldest continuous business in Keystone since it began in 1895 as the Keystone Trading Company, functioning as a general mercantile store. Also nearby, the Holy Terror Mine was founded on June 28, 1894 and was perhaps the richest gold mine in the southern Black Hills.
